6 good tips to avoiding frozen pipes

  1. Keep the home temperature above 65 degrees
  2. Have someone monitor the home while you are away for more then a couple days
  3. If away for the winter, turn the water off
  4. Turn the faucet on to a drip so that water is moving or flowing continuously
  5. Hire a contractor to properly insulate the pipes that you can see
  6. When the thaw comes and things begin to melt, this is where you will find the leak.  Watch ceilings and walls for water drips.

An important thing to remember with most insurance policies is that the pipe itself is not covered under a water claim.  Just the damage the water caused.  Not a huge issue but many do not know this.Water damage is one of the leading claims for insurance  companies.  Doing your best to secure the house when the temperateures are below 25 degrees is advised.  Water claims along with another home claim may result in a cancelation of the policy or sever rate increases.Rick Cline
